An unflattering photograph of Catherine Zeta-Jones, taken at a gala event in New York, showed her face to be marred by red blotches and enlarged pores, while spots were visible on her chin.
The picture prompted speculation that the sun in Bermuda, where she has lived with her husband Michael Douglas and their two children since 2002, has had an unwelcome effect on her face.
Radical revamp: A photograph of Catherine Zeta-Jones for an Elizabeth Arden campaign shows her with flawless skin
Just days earlier: Her skin looked blotchy, her pores were enlarged and spots were visible on her chin
But a new photograph, taken for an advertising campaign for Elizabeth Arden, tells an entirely different story.
Gone are the 39-year-old's blemishes, in place of smooth, flawless skin.
Not only is her complexion suddenly perfect, but with her heavy make-up and her hair turned partly blonde and flattened, she bears an uncanny resemblance to a long-haired Posh Spice.
Even her pout seems to be inspired by the singer.
The only part of her face still recognisable in the picture is her slightly bulbous nose.
It seems the radical revamp was the 39-year-old screen star's idea, prompted by a desire for change after being with the beauty house since 2002.
'I should be in a more modern version of Valley of the Dolls,' she said.
'But after doing this for six years I think that it is good. It's different, it not like, "Oh, there's Catherine Zeta-Jones again".'
